If I had to spend my own money today, I’d buy the Roborock Q5+. Not the Pro, not the Plus, just the Q5+. It’s the best robot vacuum under $400, and it’s not even close.

I’ve burned through five robot vacuums in my tiny apartment. The last one died because my cat knocked it off the dock and it just gave up. But the Q5+ has been running for three months without a single issue. LiDAR mapping is fast—it draws my floor plan in about ten minutes. The rubber brush doesn’t tangle with my hair or my cat’s fur, which is huge because I was cutting hair off my old vacuum’s bristle brush every single week. The app is simple, no forced account nonsense, and I can set no-go zones in two taps.

The only thing I genuinely dislike is the mopping pad. It’s a vibration pad, not a spinning mop, so it won’t touch dried coffee stains. And the dustbin is small. If you’ve got pets, you’ll empty it every other day unless you splurge on the self-emptying dock version when it dips under $400 on Amazon.

If your budget is tighter, grab the Dreame D10 Plus. It’s usually around $350 on Amazon and comes with a self-emptying base that holds dust for up to 60 days. That’s genuinely convenient. But the app is clunkier—too many menus, buried settings—and the mopping pad doesn’t lift when it hits carpet. I watched it drag a wet pad across my rug once and I almost threw it out the window.

If you’ve got mostly carpet, the iRobot Roomba Combo j5 is your pick at $379 on Amazon. Its Dirt Detect tech actually re-cleans heavily soiled spots, which is real. And the retractable mopping arm lifts the pad when it senses carpet—something the Dreame can’t do. But iRobot charges a $5-a-month subscription just to use no-go zones after the first year. That’s a straight-up ripoff. And it’s louder than my old microwave.

Why not the Eufy X10 Pro Omni? I tried it. It’s got a spinning mop and a fancy dock that washes the mop itself, which sounds amazing. But the app kept dropping connection to my Wi-Fi, and the mapping took three tries to get right. Not worth the headache.

Seriously. Just get the Roborock Q5+. You’ll thank me in 6 months.
